PUTRAJAYA: The secretary-general of a ministry and his son who were picked up by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission early this month were released today on bail.
The 59-year-old civil servant was released on bail of RM200,000 bail whereas his son, 34, was released on RM25,000 bail.
The release order was issued by magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab Rahman at the Putrajaya magistrate's court today.
Both father and son were arrested by the MACC for alleged graft on Jan 4 together with another son.
They were initially remanded for seven days.
Last week one of the sons was released on RM10,000 bail while the duo had their remand extended by four days to facilitate investigations into alleged corruption and abuse of power.
The three individuals were held under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009, Section 165 of the Penal Code, and Anti-Money Laundering Act.
MACC seized RM550,000 in cash, gold nuggets, 150 designer handbags, branded watches and foreign currencies worth RM3 million at his residence in USJ, Subang Jaya.
He was suspected of abusing his post in the ministry to accept bribes.
His two sons, who were managers of two different companies, were arrested at the MACC headquarters on the same day after giving their statements.
They were investigated for being accessories to commit graft.
MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Azam Baki confirmed that they were released.
Sources from MACC also revealed that investigations into this case are still ongoing and the trio will be called back to facilitate investigations if necessary.
"To date the MACC has recorded some 20 statements from individuals pertaining to the case. They consist of owners of companies that are believed to have been given projects by the secretary-general," revealed the source, adding that more individuals will be called up to give statements.
It was also revealed that officers from the MACC will be inspecting the ministry's office today to investigate multiple documents involving projects under the ministry.
"The MACC is also investigating a few plots of land in Selangor which involve the suspects," added the source.
