Zahid pays tribute to Indian community

BAGAN DATUK: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday paid tribute to the Indian community's contribution to the country.
"Their role and contribution is huge and their traditional activities transformed when the education system brought about changes and thinking.
"Their role is also meaningful to the independence of the country," he said in his speech at a Ponggal event here yesterday.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Bagan Datuk MP, said Ponggal brings a concept to change the community's negative attitude to positive.
"The Ponggal spirit has been going on for a long time and transformation has taken place.
"Bagan Datuk folks have adopted to changes and proved they are able to develop like those in other areas.
"A lot of them have gone on to become professionals," he added.
Ahmad Zahid noted under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir the community had contributed to the development of their areas.
"We do not want Bagan Datuk to be left out from the mainstream of development, the contribution from the community is vital," he added.
"We live in a multi-ethnic society and have to work to be united and create a harmonious society .
"I always urge my colleagues to put aside religion and background differences and as Bagan Datuk folk we must be united.
"Malaysians must adopt the Ponggal spirit," he added.
