KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia believes the Rohingya crisis could potentially impact the security and stability of the region through an influx of refugees if left unaddressed.
Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Ramlan Ibrahim said the situation can no longer be considered purely as Myanmar’s domestic problem.
“Malaysia also believes that with our active participation today, we can find a just and sustainable solution to this issue,” Ramlan said at the Extraordinary Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers of the Situation of the Rohingya Muslim Minority in Myanmar held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here yesterday.
Ramlan added the effort is in line with the objectives and principles of the OIC and hoped the Myanmar government will cease all discriminatory actions against the Rohingya Muslim Minority in Rakhine state.
“It is also hoped that the government of Myanmar will continue to allow unimpeded access for the much needed humanitarian assistance by the OIC and the international community,” he said.
The extraordinary session is expected to conclude with two outcome documents - the resolution on the situation of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and the Final Communique.
