GEORGE TOWN: The 125-year-old Kek Lok Si Temple in Air Itam became a kaleidoscope of colours during the annual lighting ceremony on Sunday to usher in Chinese New Year.
Thousands of LED bulbs and lanterns were used to "light" up the biggest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia with the lights being visible for miles around.
The area was illuminated with a myriad of colours during the 7.40pm ceremony attended by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Prior to that, Chief Monk Venerable Chan He led monks and devotees in a chanting and prayer session for blessings.
A fireworks display also lit up the evening sky to add an extra layer of gaiety to the celebrations.
The ceremony is a popular event with shutterbugs who packed not only the temple but also buildings surrounding the temple in an attempt to get a good shot.
Those with families also took the opportunity to have some quality time together while enjoying the spectacle.
The lights will be switched on daily from 7pm to midnight until Feb 24 while Chinese New Year begins this Saturday.
