Flood condition improving

PETALING JAYA: With flood waters receding in many parts of the country, victims affected by it are leaving their temporary shelter for homes.
Many of the affected house owners have got down to cleaning their homes and assessing the damage incurred.
In KUALA TERENGGANU, Bernama reported that the situation continues to improve in the flood-hit areas of Terengganu, with the number of evacuees dropping to 526 as at 1pm compared to 904 yesterday morning.
Eleven relief centres were closed as at 1pm, leaving only 12 open in four districts — Besut, Setiu, Hulu Terengganu and Kemaman, according to the Infobanjir application of the Social Welfare Department.
The last operating relief centre in the Dungun district, Sekolah Kebangsaan Minda Talong, has also closed, it said.
In Besut, the number of evacuees had dropped to 82 (from 16 families) at two relief centres compared to 155 (40 families) earlier in the day.
In Setiu, only 70 evacuees (13 families) remain at two centres, down from 153 (32 families).
In Hulu Terengganu, the number of evacuees was 255 (76 families) compared to 410 (136 families) yesterday morning.
Kemaman also saw the number of evacuees drop to 119 (21 families) from 184 (38 families).
The publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my website of the Drainage and Irrigation Department reported that the levels of all rivers were below the danger point as at 1pm.
In MIRI, up to 548 pupils in Miri and Bintulu were forced to skip school today due to floods.
Sarawak Disaster Management Committee Secretariat chief Maj Ismail Mahedin said the floods forced the closure of two schools in Miri and three in Bintulu as at 2pm.
The affected schools in Miri were Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Rumah Ranggong, Subis, and SK Long Sobeng, Baram, and those in Bintulu were SK Kuala Sigu, SK Genaan and SK Bukit Balai, he said.
He also said that five other schools in Miri and Bintulu were also affected by floods but the 301 pupils were able to continue with their lessons.
These schools were SK Bukit Mawang, SK Ng Penyarai, SK Kuala Bok, SK Sg Seputi and SK Sg Kelabit.
Ismail said the flood relief centre at the Marudi Civic Centre was closed after the floodwaters in that area receded yesterday afternoon.
It had housed 11 evacuees from six families from the Lansam Longhouse in Sungai Dabai from 10.54pm yesterday.
He also said that the level of Sungai Kemena was 10.85m as at noon yesterday, above the danger point of 9m.
KOTA KINABALU, More people were evacuated in Sabah yesterday afternoon due to the floods, with 817 having had to move out of their homes compared to 634 in the morning.
Sabah Disaster Management Committee Secretariat head Col Mulliadi Al-Hamdi Ladin said three more relief centres were opened in the Paitan sub-district, at the Kampung Kusilad Hall (housing 128 evacuees from 33 families), Kampung Sinukab Hall (79 evacuees from 14 families) and Kampung Indah Community Hall (137 evacuees from 60 families).
Thirty-five evacuees from seven families remained at Sekolah Kebangsaan Salimpodon and 59 from 18 families at Sekolah Kebangsaan Rukom while the number of evacuees at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pitas 2 rose from 94 from 45 families to 314 from 100 families.
The number of evacuees in Paitan remained at 45 in the Kampung Binsulung Hall and 20 at the Kampung Kubambangan Hall.
Mulliadi Al-Hamdi said two relief centres in Kota Marudu were closed at 10am. — Bernama
