KUANTAN: A policeman was killed and his colleague injured when the motorcycle they were travelling on, was hit by several 50kg bags of prawn feed which fell off a lorry which skidded and plunged into a ravine here last night.
Mohd Hafify Abu Bakar, 30, was crushed to death by several bags of prawn feed in the 8.30pm incident at the 41km Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway during a downpour last night.
His partner, Zulkhairieey Zulkifli sustained a broken right shoulder and was treated at the Bentong Hospital near here.
Bentong police chief Supt Mohamad Mansor Mohamad Nor said the Kuantan-bound lorry was believed to have lost control while negotiating a sharp corner at the location where the mishap occurred.
"This caused the lorry to spill the bags of prawn feed on the two policemen who were returning from Genting Sempah to the Bukit Tinggi police station after completing their patrol," he said when contacted here today.
He added the lorry later plunged into a ravine about 400m from the scene of the accident.
The 35-year-old lorry driver sustained light injuries and was given outpatient treatment at the hospital. He has been remanded for three days to facilitate investigations.
"Initial investigations revealed the lorry driver has six summonses, including two warrants of arrest.
"While a urine test on the lorry driver turned out negative, the vehicle has been impounded for inspection by Puspakom," said Mohamad Mansor.
He said each bag of prawn feed weighed 50kg.
The victim's remains were sent to the hospital and was claimed by his family at 10.30am today, for burial in Kampar, Perak. — Bernama
