KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has instructed the two accused, charged with committing a terrorist act by throwing a hand grenade at Movida pub, to appoint a defence lawyer before the case goes on trial in March, this year.
High Court judicial commissioner Datuk Nordin Hassan fixed March 14 for mention and March 29 and 30 for the hearing.
When the case came up in court, Nordin asked the accused, Imam Wahyudin Karjono, 20, if he had appointed a lawyer. Imam's relative told the court that they are "in the process" of appointing a lawyer.
Nordin then fixed the trial date. "Appoint a lawyer before the trial," Nordin told the accused.
On July 25, 2016, Imam from Puchong, Selangor, and Jonius Ondie @ Jahali, 24, from Sabah, were charged with hurling and exploding a hand grenade, causing eight people to be injured.
The accused are alleged to have committed the offence at Movida Boulevard Sdn Bhd, Lot G2 & G3, ground floor, IOI Boulevard, Jalan Kenari 5, Bandar Puchong Jaya, Puchong at 2am on June 28, 2016.
The charge is under Section 130C (1)(b) of the Penal Code, which is punishable up to 30 years and is liable to a fine, upon conviction.
Imam was also charged with supporting the commission of a terrorist act by using an explosive. The offence was allegedly committed through a Telegram application on his handphone at C-4-19, Block Cempaka, Jalan Indah 1, Puchong, between March 25 and June 28, 2016.
The charge is under Section 130J(1)(b) of the Penal Code, punishable with a life imprisonment, or 30 years jail or fine, upon conviction.
Earlier four lawyers who represented the accused withdrew due to insufficient time to prepare for trial.
Nordin also fixed April 3 and April 4, 2017 to hear Jonius's case where he is accused of providing support to terror acts via Telegram, in a house at Jalan Sg Condong 3, Bandar Armada Putra in Pulau Indah, between March 25 and July 1, 2016.
Jonius was charged under Section 130J(1)(b) of the Penal Code.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mustaffa P.Kunyalam appeared for the prosecution.
