Eateries flouting no-plastic bag policy can be fined

PETALING JAYA: Restaurants in Selangor are no longer allowed to use polystyrene plates or cups since the state government implemented a no-plastic bag and polystyrene container policy since Jan 1.
State executive councillor for environment Elizabeth Wong said this has been included as conditions for business licenses and non-compliance will be punished.
"This policy no longer allows the use of polystyrene, and any non-complying businesses will be fined a maximum of RM1,000 as a breach of license," Wong told theSun in a text message today.
She said enforcement officers from all local governments will periodically inspect businesses to ensure compliance.
Wong said businesses may provide alternatives if they wish to but consumers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags and containers as opposed to any single-use containers or bags.
She was responding to reports received by theSun that some restaurants are still serving food and drinks in polystyrene containers.
