Press Digest: Additional speed traps deployed for CNY holidays

PETALING JAYA: Highway users, particularly those using the North-South Expressway (NSE), East Coast Expressway II (LPT2) and Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Krai, take note!
In view of the heavy traffic during the Chinese New Year period, the Road Transport Department (RTD) has deployed an additional seven mobile speed cameras to nab speedsters between Jan 21 and Feb 5, Sin Chew Daily reported yesterday.
RTD Director-General Datuk Seri Nazri Siron said that in conjunction with its Chinese New Year Strategic Op 2017, these mobile speed cameras are being deployed along LPT2 (Km255.9 eastbound), NSE (at Km95 southbound, Kuala Muda, Kedah; Km299.9 northbound, Kampar, Perak; Km145.2 southbound, and Km151.4 northbound, Pagoh, Johor) and (Km17 of Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Krai in Kelantan).
He told the daily that stretches at the seven areas are accident hotspots and the mobile speed cameras are deployed to reduce accidents and enhance the safety of road users.
Nazri said the department is studying whether the seven mobile speed cameras should continue to be deployed after this festive period.
RTD has earlier listed seven major offences under its current op and offenders caught will be taken straight to court.
The seven offences are beating the traffic lights, overtaking on double lines, using mobile phones while driving dangerously, driving in the emergency lane, cutting queues, not using seat belts and (for commercial vehicles) using the outer-most lane continuously.
Those taken to court can be slapped with a maximum fine of RM2,000.
At present, only those caught using the emergency lane are hauled straight to court where offenders have been fined between RM1,500 and RM2,000 each.
