KUALA LUMPUR: In conjunction with the upcoming Lunar New Year, ten underprivileged families from PPR Kampung Muhibbah, Puchong have been selected to join the Shopping Buddy program recently.
This is a charity program initiated by the Great Vision Charity Association (GVCA).
Accompanied by volunteers from GVCA, each needy family was given RM100 angpao for a shopping treat at Tesco Scott Garden.
The ten families were 6 Chinese families, 2 Malay families and 2 Indian families.
Some participants ecstatically got themselves daily necessities like rice, flour, oil while the Chinese families purchased goods needed to celebrate Chinese New Year.
GVCA representative, Chor Mun Yan said, "We visited the houses of these needy families to understand the plight they are facing."
"One of the families that we assessed had individuals suffering from mental illness and were having difficulties in living a normal life. The 54-years-old breadwinner of the family earns a living of RM700 per month to support his family of his elderly mother and 3 other siblings who are suffering from Down syndrome." said Chor.
"Among the participants, there were two elderly residents who work as cleaners with an average monthly income of RM550, which is not enough to support their living." she added.
"We want to prepare for the festivites without worrying about the extra expenditure." she said further.
After the shopping session, the participants had lunch together before going back to their homes.
Everyone went home with a smile.
