SHAH ALAM: Police shot dead a notorious member of the Mamak Gang during a shootout at Jalan Bukit Cerakah here this morning.
The 53 year-old-man who was high on the police radar tried to escape a police inspection in the incident that took place at around 4am.
In a press conference earlier, Selangor police chief Datuk Abdul Samah Mat said personnel from the Serious Crime Division (D9) unit on a routine crime prevention round in Setia Alam had noticed the suspect behaving strangely in a vehicle.
"When the vehicle was approached and ordered to stop, the suspect sped off and tried to out run the policemen," said Abdul Samah.
He said a chase then ensued which ended up in the suspect ramming into the police vehicle and losing control.
"The suspect was armed and instead of surrendering, he fired several shots towards police while trying to flee on foot," he revealed.
Police then returned fire in self-defence and killed him on the spot.
Abdul Samah said that the man was a member of the gang and had 26 prior criminal records for robberies, break-ins and drug-related crimes.
Police had also seized a pistol which had three live 9mm bullets in its magazine.
The Mamak Gang was notorious in the 90's for the RM12 million Subang Airport gold bar heist where they impersonated police officers and made off with the gold at the airport.
