SHAH ALAM: Police have arrested five men who kidnapped a transportation company manager and demanded a ransom of RM3 million from his family.
Selangor police chief Datuk Seri Abdul Samah Mat said the kidnapping of the 33-year-old victim occurred about 5am on Wednesday morning.
He was bundled into a car as he was leaving his home in Bandar Country Homes, Rawang early that morning.
Abdul Samah revealed that the victim’s family had received several calls throughout the day from the kidnappers who had asked for a RM3 million ransom for his safe return.
“The family had notified police immediately after they received the ransom demand, they negotiated with the kidnappers to reduce the amount to RM300,000 and were instructed to drop the money at a roadside in Rahman Putra, Sungai Buloh at 7pm on the same day of the kidnapping,” he said.
The exchange went off without a hitch, the kidnappers took the money and only released the victim at a location in Batu Arang at 6.10am the following day (Thursday).
“CID officers from both state and district police managed to trace the suspects a few hours later before launching a series of raids in the Batu Arang area and key locations around the Klang Valley,” he said at a press conference here today.
“The operation was a success, we arrested five men aged between 22 and 35 and also recovered the RM300,000 ransom money that was paid to the kidnappers,” he added.
Abdul Samah said one of the suspects has a criminal record for kidnapping, and has also been the subject of investigation in a murder case.
Police are expected to secure a remand order against the suspects today.
