TAPAH: Fatal road accidents recorded a drop although the number of road accidents rose by six per cent in seven days of Ops Selamat 10 in conjunction with Chinese New Year.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Mahamad Akhir Darus said 11,440 accidents were recorded, 642 cases more than the corresponding period last year (Ops Selamat 8).
"The number of fatal accidents dropped from 123 to 95 cases while deaths dropped by 23%, from 132 to 100," he told a press conference on Ops Selamat 10 at Tapah rest and recreation area (North) here, today.
Ops Selamat 10 is from Jan 21 to Feb 5.
Motorcyclists and pillion riders were the highest number of casualties with 59 deaths followed by car drivers and passengers with 25 deaths.
Mahamad Akhir said that preliminary analysis found that contributing factors include dangerous driving and lack of focus when on the road.
"The drop in fatal accidents shows that Ops Selamat 10 has a positive impact on road users and the police have done their job well. The issue that the authorities have failed does not arise," he added.
A total of 103,856 summonses for various offences were issued, a drop of 26,015 or 20% compared to 129,871 summonses issued during Ops Selamat 8.
Police issued 68,146 summonses based on camera recording while 26,494 were summonses converted from traffic notices.
Most of the summonses issued were for speeding (49,611) queue jumping (1,997) and beating traffic lights (1,628). — Bernama
