PETALING JAYA: The government should consider limiting vehicles, especially lorries, from entering Kuala Lumpur in its effort to reduce pollution and make the city centre "greener" an environment group has said.
Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia (Peka) president Puan Sri Shariffa Sabrina Syed Akil said this was among several measures the government should take, to address rampant development in the city.
"While it would not be an easy matter (to limit vehicle entries), an alternative could be to enforce specific entry time for heavy vehicles like lorries to control carbon emission," she was quoted as saying by the Malay-language daily Berita Harian.
Shariffa Sabrina said other measures included replanting of trees, conserving forest reserves and waste management through recycling.
"Also, conservation of green areas through replanting, creating parks on building roofs as well as the use of solar energy in premises. All parties should work together to make Kuala Lumpur greener, to ensure the comfort of the people here," she said.
Kuala Lumpur, together with Putrajaya and Labuan, today celebrates its 43rd Federal Territory Day which falls on Feb 1 every year.
