Penang will not join Federal Territories: Guan Eng

02 Feb 2017 / 15:39 H.

GEORGE TOWN: Penang will not join Federal Territory vowed Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today.
He said such a move contravened the Federal Constitution as Penang is recognised as a state in Malaysia.
Lim said a move like this could not be forced as the Constitution needed to be amended and consent obtained from the state government and Conference of Rulers.
He described such a suggestion as "seditious" for threatening the integrity and unity of the federation and that the matter was never discussed.
Lim said he will not become the last Chief Minister of Penang and that there will be many more Penang chief ministers after him.
"I will not sell out the future of Penang, I will not be a traitor," he said in a press conference.
Lim was responding to Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor who reportedly wanted to expand the Federal Territories to include Penang,Langkawi (Kedah) and parts of Malacca.
Tengku Adnan reportedly made the comments during an interview with radio station BFM on Feb 1, which was subsequently reported by an online news portal.
Lim also expressed his belief that Kedah and Malacca would not be happy with such a move but said the decision was theirs to make.
He said the matter was not raised when he met with Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah and Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron last month.
On Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) reaching an agreement to work with PAS, Lim said he was yet to be informed on the matter.
He said he will be meeting with PPBM vice president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir and would withhold comment until then.
