GEORGE TOWN: The suggestion to turn Penang into a Federal Territory has transform into an election issue for Pakatan Harapan (PH).
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (pix) today told a packed Chinese New Year open house luncheon to continue to ensure PH governed the state after the 14th General Elections (GE).
He said he did not want to see Penang being legislated out of existence as a state in the country.
"Penang is a state as recognised by the constitution.
"I urge the people of Penang to rise in the elections to ensure PH remained the state government to protect the rights of Penang as a state," he said in his speech.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnann Tengku Mansor reportedly wanted to expand the Federal Territories to include Penang, Pulau Langkawi (Kedah) and parts of Malacca.
An online news portal reported him making those remarks during an interview with radio station BFM on Feb 1.
Lim also said his government stood together with the federal administration over reclaiming Pulau Batu Puteh.
He said his administration do not politicise foreign affairs.
"We stand together on national sovereignty and national security.
"We hope they will also stand together with us in ensuring the integrity and sanctity of Penang to exist as a state," he added.
