PUTRAJAYA: Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin reminded wholesalers, retailers and traders on the importance of labelling and segregating non-halal products to avoid seizure by enforcement officers.
Touching on the ministry's "Ops Berus" currently being held nationwide, Hamzah said the seizure of brushes suspected to be made from pigs' hair is being done in accordance with the law.
"Our officers are not simply seizing these items at their whim and fancy but due to the fact that these items were not labelled and segregated accordingly.
"It is an offence under Section 29 of Trade Descriptions Act 2011," he told reporters prior to officiating KPDNKK's Consumer Awareness and 1Malaysia Smart Awareness Squad at the ministry, here, today.
He also encouraged retailers to label such products as non-halal to prevent complaints from consumers especially Muslims.
"There must be standards when it comes to selling non-halal items. It should not be misleading," he said.
Saying that a full report of the operation will be tabled soon, Hamzah added that the brush samples will be tested at the Chemistry Department before further action is taken.
Meanwhile, KPDNKK enforcement chief Datuk Mohd Roslan Mahayuddin said enforcement officers so far have raided 157 premises, and seized suspected pig-hair brushes worth RM10,988 from 37 premises during Ops Berus which was launched on Monday.
