Chung Ling High School marks centenary with stamp and first day cover

GEORGE TOWN: Chung Ling High School (CLHS) yesterday mark its centenary in style by having the occasion commemorated in a postal stamp and first day cover.

POS Malaysia Bhd CEO Datuk Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh said schools reaching a 100-years-old were a rare occasion more so for those having their centenarian status commemorated in stamp.

He said Universiti Malaya (UM) and Kuala Kangsar Malay College, also celebrated 100 years in 2005, and Penang Free School 200 years last year.

He said CLHS should be proud of reaching the 100 years.

"This is the first Chinese school to have commemorative stamps in celebrating their centenary," he said at the launch and was accompanied by School Board of Directors chairman Datuk Koay Hean Eng.

Koay in his speech said this was a beginning of a new chapter for the school which is situated in Air Itam.

He said having CLHS commemorated in stamps and first day covers was a special day in history for the school.

"All who have pass through these door should be proud," he added.

The stamps and first day cover are now avialable and are priced at 85 cents, 95 cents and RM1.05 while the full set with first day covers cost RM81.40.

The Chung Ling School was founded by supporters of Dr Sun Yat Sen in 1917 and it became secondary school in 1923 and renamed to Chung Ling High School.

Chung Ling (Private) High School was established in 1961 and Chung Ling High School Butterworth was founded in 1986 to cater to the educational needs of students on the mainland.

All three schools are collectively known as the Tri-Chung Ling Schools and are operated separately but share the same objectives and board.
