PETALING JAYA: PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali has brushed aside former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim's claim that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is the de facto opposition leader.
He maintained that PKR president and Permatang Pauh MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is still the opposition number one.
"We have an opposition leader in the form of Wan Azizah, and we are preparing for the elections," he told reporters after attending the Kampung Chempaka Chinese New Year celebration, here, today.
Zaid, fresh from joining DAP on Tuesday, had in an interview with a local online portal, said he believed Mahathir is currently the de facto leader despite repeated denials by Pakatan Harapan.
He said the former prime minister is currently the only leader with the calibre to unite and lead the opposition in the absence of former Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who is in prison.
Meanwhile, Azmin dismissed claims that he does not see eye to eye with Zaid, adding that, like Mahathir, he hoped Zaid would remain loyal to DAP for a long period.
On whether PKR would join PAS for its Act 355 gathering on Feb 18, Azmin said: "I'm not sure if we have been invited yet, you'll have to ask the secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail."
