LUNDU: The Election Commission (EC) is confident the heavy downpour on early voting day today will not affect voter turnout, according to its chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah.
"The weather today with heavy rain does not appear to affect, or have a significant impact on voting today.
"Because as of 9am, we found 37% of early voters comprising 188 soldiers and policemen had already voted in the two polling stations open today," he said.
He was speaking to media after visiting the early polling centre at the Kampung Sungai Lundu Community Hall here, today.
The two polling centres, namely the one in Kampung Sungai Lundu and the ULS Hall in the Sempadi Camp opened at 8am, with each providing one voting booth.
A total of 188 people, or 1.9% of 9,959 registered voters in the election were eligible to vote at the two centres today.
Meanwhile Mohd Hashim said the Tanjong Datu state by-election campaign had so far gone smoothly.
"There have been no unwanted posters smearing each other's personalities".
"I saw many posters promoting harmony, kinship, and unity among the community," he said, adding he was confident there were no major issues that could affect peace in the state or the district during the election.
"Once again, I hope reporters play a good and important role in uniting our society and keeping order during the campaign period," he said. — Bernama
