Mental health cases increase in Labuan

    LABUAN: Mental health cases in this duty free island have recorded an increase between 2013 and last year.
    According to Labuan Health Department statistics, there were 614 cases in 2013 compared to 1,310 in 2016, a jump of 113.35%.
    The 2016 figure also showed an increase of 30.6% compared to 1,003 cases in 2015.
    The department in a statement to Bernama said there were 196 mental health cases such as autism, learning disability, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disability or mental retardation and behavioural problems among children aged 10 years and below.
    There were 144 cases of mental disorder such as adolescent crisis and depression among adolescents aged between 10 years and 19 years.
    There were 801 cases of mental illness among adults aged between 20 and 59, and 169 cases of anxiety disorder, depression and dementia among the elderly aged 60 and above.
    The statement also said the department's Psychiatric and Mental Health Clinic provides services such as community psychiatric treatment, counselling clinic, correctional (inmate) specialist visit and Labuan health clinic specialist visit. — Bernama
