Some DBKL staff only left with RM50 monthly after settling debts: Tengku Adnan

KUALA LUMPUR: Some Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) support staff only have RM50 left of their monthly salary after settling their debts, said Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
He said these were among the over 1,200 DBKL staff who have high monthly debt obligations.
"There is so little left of their monthly net income that they can't pay for their living expenses," he told reporters after a DBKL monthly gathering here today.
He said some of them had been caught cheating and falsifying their salary slip in order to qualify for higher loan.
In addition he said some staff had taken so many loans that the loan amount is equivalent to their monthly income.
As such Tengku Adnan said the Federal Territories Ministry would try to assist these support staff solve their financial problems.
This could be done by getting lower interest rate or extending the term of the loan which might help lower their monthly payments thus freeing up cash for more urgent needs, he said.
"We also propose that DBKL help them by settling the debts first and later make periodic deductions from the staff's salary.
"However, this has not been finalised as we are still looking into the mechanism," he said. — Bernama
