KUALA LUMPUR: Barely a week after a family of four perished in a fire, another blaze on Monday claimed the lives of a woman and two children.
The fire on Monday broke out at a terrace house in Taman Wangsa Permai, Kepong, near here.
The two primary school girls have been identified as Ng Zi Xuan, 10, and Lam Tan Yi, 7, while the woman, a foreigner, has been identified as Sok Srey, 29, the family's maid.
It is learnt that at the time the fire broke out, six occupants, comprising a family of three, a grandmother, a female cousin and a maid, were in the house.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Mohd Sani Harul said three others aged between 36 and 81 survived the 11pm fire with burns as they managed to escape through the first floor balcony with the aid of neighbours.
"The Selayang and Sungai Buloh fire stations were alerted to the incident at about 11.20pm and 20 fire and rescue personnel rushed to the scene.
"Upon reaching the scene, they found the fire to be at an advanced stage on the ground floor, and the victims were trapped on the upper floor," he said in a statement today.
Mohd Sani said firefighters managed to enter the master bedroom from the neighbour's house where they found the three victims lying unconscious in the upstairs living room.
"The injured victims were rushed to the Selayang Hospital while the bodies of the three victims who perished in the fire have been sent to the Sungai Buloh hospital for post-mortem," he said.
He said the fire damaged 80% of the house.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Meanwhile, when met at the scene, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Zamri Che Din said the fire started at the ground floor.
Zamri said the couple and the paternal grandmother managed to escape via the backdoor and the upstairs balcony.
"We entered the burning home and found the two children and the maid on the first floor in a semi-conscious state. They had some burns but were still alive during the rescue," he said.
"The victims were sent to Hospital Sungai Buloh for treatment, but died several hours later, believed to be from excessive smoke inhalation," he said.
A neighbour, 53, who requested anonymity, said her family was asleep when the fire broke out and were unaware of the incident.
"Several neighbours had to scream and shout at us to wake us. I had no idea what was going on, and thought the loud crackling was from people playing firecrackers," she said.
Last week on Feb 6, a couple and their two sons were killed after a fire broke out at their double storey terrace house in USJ 2, Subang Jaya.
The victims were found on the first floor of their two-storey house after suffocating to death from the acrid smoke that began on the ground floor
The victims have been identified as:
Ng Zi Xuan, 10 (daughter of couple)
Lam Yan Yi, Seven (niece of couple)
Sol Srey, 29 (foreigner, maid)
The survivors have been identified as:
1) Lam Choon Lai, 36-year-old wife
2) Shamsul Ng Abdullah, 58-year-old husband
