AYER KEROH: A father who attempted to steal toys as gifts for his son's birthday was sentenced to one day in jail and fined RM1,600 at the Magistrates Court, here, today.
Magistrate Mohd Firdaus Saleh sentenced Chan Kok Kiat, 36, from Machap Umboo, Alor Gajah after he pleaded guilty.
The court also ordered Chan to serve a one month jail term should he fail to settle the fine. However he paid the fine.
Chan was first charged with stealing two toy motorcycles worth RM109.80 belonging to Toy R Us (M) Sdn Bhd at the second floor of the Dataran Pahlawan shopping centre at 6.30pm on Jan 31.
For the first offence, the accused was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft which carries a maximum 10-year-jail term or fine.
While for his second offence, Chan was charged with attempting to steal two toy motorcycles and a toy car worth RM209.75 at the same time and date.

Earlier deputy public prosecutor Shazreen Nadia Saaban urged the court to impose a sentence befitting the nature of the offence.
However, counsel Haslinda Abu Bakar who appeared for Chan appealed for a lighter sentence as it was his first offence.
She said he was desperate to get toys for his son's birthday despite not having cash in hand.
Mohd Firdaus sentenced Chan to a day in jail and RM1,000 fine for the first offence and ordered him to pay a RM600 fine for the second offence.
