GEORGE TOWN: A molotov cocktail is believed to have been thrown at the office of the Football Association of Penang (FAP) in Jalan Sepoy Lines here.
Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said the incident was discovered about 7.55am on Monday when an officer went to the office.
He said there were burn marks and pieces of glass from glass bottles at the scene but no losses were recorded.
"This is the first time this has happened according to the complainant," he said in a statement.
Mior said there were no close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the area and no witnesses.
"Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive," he said and the case was probed for mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage to amount of RM50 under the Penal Code.
In an ad-hoc press conference yesterday, FAP executive secretary Muhammad Asyraf Mohamad Yusof said there were burn marks by the staircase.
He said he feared for the safety of FAP staff and has lodged a police report over the matter.
He added a similar incident happened early Tuesday morning and did not know the cause for the attacks.
"I will ask police to increase patrols in the area," he said.
FAP president Zairil Khir Johari meanwhile urged for calm and restraint among fans and not to resort to such methods.
"Granted it is the work of a few irresponsible individuals, but if they continue then it will mar the whole game," he said when contacted.
The Penang football team has lost four games on the trot when the season began without scoring a single goal and is propping up the Malaysian Super League (MSL) table.
