UNDERPRIVILEGED Petaling Jaya (PJ) residents diagnosed with cancer can be assured of top-notch cancer treatment at Beacon Hospital without having to worry about the high medical cost of treatment.
The above statement comes with Beacon Hospital’s recent launch of its RM1 million Petaling Jaya RadiotherapyWelfare Fund, following the hospital’s expansion.
The hospital’s executive director, Dr Chong Su-Lin, explained that the fund aims to assist residents in the PJ and surrounding areas who cannot afford proper radiotherapy treatment.
“The fund is an extension of our existing corporate social responsibility initiative to help underprivileged cancer patients as a means to lessen the burden faced by many underprivileged cancer patients,” Chong said at the event.
BURDEN OF CANCER
Beacon Hospital medical director Datuk Dr Mohamed Ibrahim agreed with Chong and pointed out that combating cancer and other long draw-out illnesses can be exhausting and often an expensive journey for patients and their families.
“It can be even more stressful when a patient is struggling to pay for the costly treatment, which many a time results in many patients not being able to get proper treatment or simply giving up hope due to high medical costs.
“As for those who find a way to struggle through and are finally able to get treatment, they will be confronted with serious financial problems due to high medical bills,” Mohamed said.
He added that the fund will not only be able to help ease a patients’ financial burden, it can also act as a platform to educate the public on cancer and how to cope with it.
SIMILAR PROGRAMMES
Additionally, Mohamed revealed that the hospital has also allocated funding to help non-PJ residents with their cancer treatment costs as the ultimate aim of the hospital is to give hope to those in need.
