Engineering for tomorrow

16 Feb 2017 / 14:57 H.

WITH its multidisciplinary fields and lucrative career prospects, engineering has become an appealing area of study for most students.
However, a successful career in the field begins with a strong base, and students will be able to find that at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.
A leading name in the industry, Heriot-Watt is ranked 34th in the UK and fourth in Scotland, and placed in the Top 10 in the UK for Chemical Engineering and Building, according to the Complete University Guide 2017.
The university’s pathway to its engineering programme begins with its Foundation in Science programme.
Jonathan Chang Tien Chzie, a former Foundation in Science student, is now pursuing the university’s undergraduate Chemical Engineering programme.
“I choose to come here as the tuition fees were reasonable and the foundation courses led to more engaging study methods that promoted independent learning.
“I have learnt valuable lessons and I feel that the structure of the courses here have successfully integrated these values into the core of its programmes,” he said.
Another unique advantage offered is its inter-campus transfer programme: Go Global. Being established in three countries (UK, Dubai and Malaysia), Heriot-Watt is able to offer students a global education. Through this programme, students can transfer to their campus of choice as long as their programme is offered there.
This option is open to the university’s students who have completed their foundation studies and are continuing with their undergraduate studies, as well as current undergraduate students.
Cormac Hopkinson, a transfer student from Heriot-Watt’s UK campus, is currently pursuing the university’s Chemical Engineering programme here.
“I attended a meeting held by (Provost and CEO of the Malaysia campus) Professor Robert Craik at the Edinburgh campus after receiving an email outlining the opportunity.
“The information presented, along with the incentive of a warm climate, the prospect of travelling around South East Asia and a new and fascinating culture, made the decision an easy one. The assistance provided by the university during the transfer process made it effortless,” he said.
For more information on the Go Global programme, other programmes and scholarships offered at Heriot-Watt, visit its campus in Putrajaya during its Open Day on March 18 and 19. Alternatively, log on to www. hw.edu.my or call 03 8894 3888.
Leading education provider
HERIOT-WATT University Malaysia’s purpose-built campus opened to students in Putrajaya in September 2014 and the formal launch took place on Feb 12, 2015.
The campus sits on 4.8 acres in a stunning lakeside location providing exceptional educational facilities in an excellent environment, close to the Putrajaya marina and its modern leisure and sports facilities. This is a fantastic green area, part of Putrajaya Lake’s “green continuum”, and the building designs a conscious reference.
The campus is a state-of-the-art teaching and learning environment, reflecting its status as a leading provider of high-quality, professionally orientated education, knowledge transfer and research. Architect-designed in conjunction with educational design specialists, the campus has been developed with the current generation of students in mind, to create a dynamic, exciting place which maximises the potential of its setting for study and student life.
