PETALING JAYA: In an effort to bolster support in upholding Islam, Kelantan Umno has urged the state's people to attend the upcoming "RUU355" gathering this Saturday.
Its information chief, Datuk Md Alwi Che Ahmad, said the people especially Muslims should attend the PAS-organised rally in fulfilling their responsibility towards Islam.
"All Muslims irrespective of political affiliation should attend the rally and support PAS' efforts to place Islam at its highest level.
"Set aside politics on this matter because Islam belongs to all and is not a political tool as some may presume," he said.
Md Alwi added that the gathering is not a demonstration but a united voice by all Muslims towards strengthening Syariah law.
His call came after police had given approval for the use of Padang Merbok as the venue for the gathering.
"RUU355" or Act 355 refers to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) (Amendment) Bill tabled as a private member bill in Parliament by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, who is Marang MP.
The bill drew widespread criticism from non-Muslims and liberal Muslims, with many labelling it a prelude to Hudud and dubbed it the Hudud Bill.
Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Mohd Sukri Kaman had said the gathering, organised by PAS in support of the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, will be held from 3pm to midnight.
PAS had earlier applied to use Dataran Merdeka for the gathering, but Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) turned down the request.
Around 50,000 participants are expected to attend the rally.
