Jawi Prison unconscious inmate wakes up

GEORGE TOWN: A Jawi Prison inmate who was warded at the Seberang Jaya Hospital ICU last week in an unconscious state has regained consciousness.
His mother, P. Pachaee said she visited her son on Tuesday and was happy that he regained consciousness but unable to speak due to his weak condition.
She claimed he nodded a "yes" when she asked him if he was beaten and had his toenails pulled out while in prison.
"If the injuries were self inflicted due to mental problems, as the authorities claim, why was he sent to prison and not to the hospital in the first place?" she asked in a press conference with Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramsamy today.
The 42-year-old was admitted to the hospital on Feb 8 after he was sent to the prison on Jan 20 for a criminal offence and had to serve a five months and expected to be released in May.
Ramasamy, who heads the Custodial Death Penang Taskforce, said he has yet to receive feedback from the police and the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC).
Calling for a thorough probe into the matter , Ramasamy hoped there will be no similar incidents in the future.
Also present was Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegeran, lawyer for the inmate, who said he will pursue the matter with the relevant authorities.
When contacted, Penang police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lyee said investigations were ongoing.
