PUTRAJAYA: The Qatar Development Fund (QDF) will provide financial assistance to 56,135 Rohingya refugees in Malaysia.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the fund, which is expected to involve millions of ringgit, would be utilised for skills training, education and health.
"The QDF will be regulated by the National Security Council, the Prime Minister's office, other ministries, government agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGO) involved.
"The fund will be used to implement the three most important aspects for the Rohingya refugees who have the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card in Malaysia," he said in a statement after chairing the high level committee meeting on issues related to the UNHCR at Perdana Putra here today.
The Qatar government has agreed to provide funds for Malaysia to help the refugees, focusing on primary school education, skills training, medical treatment and healthcare during Ahmad Zahid's visit to the country earlier this month.
The sponsorship for the humanitarian project would be channelled through the QDF for Rohingya refugees in Malaysia with the UNHCR cards.
Ahmad Zahid said the skills training, pre-schooling and primary schooling for the children and a health insurance scheme for the Rohingyas would be implemented by the Human Resource Ministry, Education Ministry, Health Ministry and several NGO's.
