Public road cyclists should be cautious

KUALA LUMPUR: Cyclists are urged to plan their routes in advance to minimise the danger, especially public roads without bike lanes.
Federal Territories Ministry secretary general Datuk Seri Adnan Md Ikhsan said during weekends, one can see many cyclist convoys and it is fine if they use designated bike lanes, but dangerous on open roads.
"If they wish to cycle, plan accordingly and make sure the routes are as safe as possible," Adnan told the press after officiating Kayuhan Ceria 2017 at Dataran Merdeka this morning.

This advise comes following eight teenagers killed and another eight injured when a car driven by a 22-year-old woman rammed into them while they were cycling in the early hours of Saturday at Jalan Lingkaran Dalam in Johor, which was reportedly poorly lit.
Six of the casualties were killed on the spot, while two died on their way to Hospital Sultanah Aminah, according to Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Police Sulaiman Salleh. Two of those injured are in critical condition.
All 16 involved in the accident are aged between 13 and 17.
Adnan also advised those who cycle at night to take precautionary measures such as taking routes with good lighting and to make sure that their bicycle lamps are working.
Meanwhile, the Kayuhan Ceria 2017 saw about 6,000 cyclists participating in both the 30km "open" category and 7km "family" category.
The event was a collaboration between the Federal Territories Sports Council and the Federal Territories Ministry.
