Federal ministry sec-gen, son to be charged for alleged corruption tomorrow
KUALA LUMPUR: A federal ministry secretary-general and his son detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) last month for alleged corruption and power abuse are expected to be charged for graft tomorrow.
The 59-year-old secretary-general who is a Datuk and his 35-year-old son were detained again today at 10.30am by the Kedah MACC and will be taken to the Jalan Duta and Shah Alam courts respectively early on Tuesday to face the charges.
The Datuk was held by the MACC on Jan 4 for allegedly taking kickbacks from the award of contracts to private companies he favoured. His son was also detained on the same day allegedly being in cahoots with his father.
The men were picked up at their Subang Jaya house by an MACC raiding party that recovered gold bars, cash, luxury handbags and watches worth over RM5 million in a search at the place.
The MACC also identified 10 plots of land in the Klang Valley owned by the suspects family members.
Investigators also learnt that the secretary-general was an avid investor of gold and foreign currency, regularly trading millions of ringgit and observing markets for both portfolios personally.
The man who is a director of government-linked company had also taken a trip to the United States to play golf — a holiday which allegedly was borne by certain individuals with vested interest in the Datuk's powers in the award of multi-million ringgit government contracts.
The secretary-general had assumed the post of a high-ranking state officer in 2010 before he was was appointed as secretary-general of the current ministry he is with in 2015.
