ALICIA Vikander and Dane DeHaan are the star-crossed lovers of Tulip Fever, a dramatic love story set in 17th century Netherlands at the height of Europe's expensive infatuation with tulip bulbs.
Who's in it and what's it about?
Set in 17th century Netherlands at a time when tulip flowers were considered extremely valuable, the subject of great commercial and public interest, Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (of The Danish Girl) stars in Tulip Fever as orphan girl Sophia, chosen as a wife for rich husband Cornelis Sandvoort (Christoph Waltz of Spectre, Horrible Bosses 2.)
But the match is not as enjoyable for Sophia as it is for Cornelis, who has commissioned young artist Jan (Dutch-surnamed Dane DeHaan, Chronicle, In Treatment) to paint her portrait.
The two are taken with each other and are desperate to be together, and so they hatch their own scheme to be free of Cornelis's control, a scheme that is not without serious risks.
Oscar winner Judi Dench (Shakespeare in Love,) Cara Delevingne and Holliday Grainger (both Anna Karenina,) Tom Hollander (The Night Manager,) David Harewood (Homeland) and Jack O'Connell (Unbroken) are among the English-accented cast's native contingent; Zach Galifianakis is better known as a comedian but, just as with Jonah Hill in Wolf of Wall Street, this film could make him as a dramatic actor.
Who's behind it?
Justin Chadwick directs Tulip Fever following Scarlett Johansson's The Other Boleyn Girl, Satellite Award winner The First Grader with Naomie Harris, and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom also with Harris, Idris Elba, and Terry Pheto.
Deborah Moggach wrote the original novel with British playwright Sir Tom Stoppard (of Shakespeare in Love fame) adapting it for film.
Distributing is The Weinstein Company, with executive desire to have the finished film re-cut in editing believed to have prompted a rescheduling from a previously announced mid-2016 debut.
When's it out?
By early February, release dates had been announced for selected territories including the US and Canada (February 24,) Singapore (March 9,) and Germany (March 30,) awaiting announcement for the UK, where it was filmed, and the Netherlands itself. — AFP Relaxnews
