PETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0 has launched a voter registration campaign to get the four million unregistered voters to register and vote in the 14th general election.
The electoral watchdog's initiative called the 'U Campaign' will include several activities at post offices and other events across Malaysia.
Its chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah said the campaign to be held the whole of next month.
"Each registration will take up to six months to process and be gazetted," she said, adding that about 4.4 million eligible voters have yet to register.
"Assuming that the election takes place in Sept, then March 31 will be the last day for people to register," Maria Chin said during a press conference held at Bersih 2.0 office here today.
The U- Campaign will kickstart on March 4 in Kuantan and Inanam in Sabah, following day in Johor Baru and Alor Setar, March 11 in Penang, Kuching and Klang and ends on March 25 and 26 in Petaling Jaya.
Bersih 2.0 vice chairperson Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari said it needs to step in and raise people's awareness through the campaign.
He also lamented the Election Commission (EC) for making the registration process "unnecessarily difficult".
"The EC also has also ignored our recommendation for automatic voter registration. This is one of the EC's fundamental roles and yet it is not even able to carry out its basic responsibility of registering voters," Shahrul said.
