Nicholas Home for the Blind and Visually Impaired now has braille terminals for online use

GEORGE TOWN: Visually impaired students now have a leg up on their studies as the St Nicholas Home for the Blind and Visually Impaired is now equipped with braille terminals for students to access reference materials online.
These electronic terminals allowed blind or visually (BVI) persons to "read" documents on a computer via raised round-tipped pins on the flat surface of the terminals.
In launching the Online Learning Resource Project, Pulau Tikus assemblyman Yap Soo Huey said the project will be a boon to BVI students.
She said the availability of braille reading materials was limited but the project now allowed sight-impaired persons to access resources on the World Wide Web.
"This will help them achieve their dreams through education," she said accompanied by Home executive director Daniel Soon and IT officer Ung Chee Yeong.
The Home presently has two terminals which were purchased at a cost of RM17,000 for both.
Ung meanwhile expressed his hope the public will help support the project so more terminals can be purchased for the benefit of the BVI community.
One of them is Lu Ching Hong, 18, who said he was happy there was a way for him to access the Internet now.
"I can find the information I need for my studies with this service," he said while Wenmuhammad Syafieq, 16, also mirrored similar sentiments saying that he now can get information for himself.
