GENTING HIGHLANDS: Resorts World Genting has hit a record number of passengers following the launch of its new cable car system, the Awana Skyway recently.
Resorts World Genting (Theme & Tenancy) senior vice president Thomas Ng said the rollout of the latest cable car system on Dec 22, last year, saw an average of 10,000 to 12,000 passengers daily.
"During the Chinese New Year period, we hit the highest record with 42,000 passengers daily as compared to some 30,000 passengers during the same time last year," he said during a media briefing at the Genting Grand Hotel, here, today.
The 99-cable-car system costing almost RM200 million including its infrastructure is capable of ferrying up to 3,000 passengers per hour.
At a top speed of six meters per second, the cable car which ascents from the Awana station to the SkyAvenue station takes only 10 minutes to complete the 2.8km journey.
The latest addition, he said is part of the resort's commitment in staying current and relevant with the tourism demand.
"Visitors (onboard the Awana Skyway) will get a spectacular bird's eye view of the 130-million-year-old rainforest surrounding Resorts World Genting as well as the site of the future Twentieth Century Fox World theme park during the 620m ascent," he added
Thomas said the Awana Skyway is the fourth car cable system the resort has built since it commenced operations in 1975 with passengers having the option of disembarking at either the Chin Swee station or until the SkyAvenue station which connects directly to the SkyAvenue shopping mall.
He said they have one of the best safety records in the world as far as the cable car system is concerned.
The Awana Skyway cable car system is part of a 10-year masterplan to transform Resorts World Genting and to boost the visitor growth to 30 million by 2020 from the current 20 million.
The Genting Integrated Tourism Plan (GITP) includes a total capital investment of RM10.38 billion which includes the upcoming world's first Twentieth Century Fox World theme park and the new SkyAvenue shopping mall.
