KLANG: Universiti Malaya (UM) has formed a five-member panel to investigate allegations of racism against one of its lecturers.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan assured netizens that the findings of the panel would be made public.
Kamalanathan said he had contacted UM vice chancellor Tan Sri Prof Dr Mohd Amin Jalaludin to seek clarification on the allegation by a student who has yet to be identified.
"I take a serious view of the allegation by a student against a professor cum lecturer at UM who was disrespectful and prejudicial towards some students.
"He (Mohd Amin) was aware of the allegation and assured me that the university will not condone such behaviour from any staff member," he said in a statement, today.
Kamalanathan said the panel will meet all the parties involved as well as witnesses to the alleged incident.
"Upon completion of the investigation the university will issue a public statement on its findings," he said.
Kamalanathan added that if found guilty, action will be taken against the lecturer or anyone else found guilty of tarnishing the good name of the university.
He was commenting on an incident where a formal complaint was lodged against the lecturer by the unidentified student on Feb 17.
The complaint however was leaked across various social media platforms including Facebook and WhatsApp.
The postings angered netizens who called for severe action against the lecturer.
