PETALING JAYA: Police have identified the chemical used in the murder of Kim Jong-Nam as the highly toxic VX- nerve agent.
Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the Centre for Chemical Weapons Analysis at the Chemistry Department carried out preliminary tests and identified the VX- nerve agent.
"The centre did dry swabs on the eyes and face of the victim.
"The chemical substance on the exhibits has been identified as VX-Nerve-Agent," Khalid said in a statement.
He added that VX is classified as a chemical weapon under Schedule 1 of the Chemical Weapons Convention Act 2005 and Chemical Weapons Convention Act 1997.
He said other exhibits are still being analysed.
Meanwhile, he also denied that Jong-Nam's next-of-kin will be arriving in Malaysia to claim his body.
He said Deputy Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim had been misquoted by the media.
"He was misquoted. There is no plan that we know of that a relative is coming but we are still waiting for a next-of-kin to come forward," Khalid said.
On Thursday, Noor Rashid was quoting as saying that Jong-Nam's next-of-kin was expected to arrive in Malaysia within the next two days to assist in identifying his remains.
He had reportedly said the family member could be a child or relative who lives not far from Malaysia.
Jong-Nam was killed on Feb 13 by two women who applied a toxic liquid on his face at the KL International Airport 2 departure hall as he was about to leave for Macau.
