Free petrol to motorcyclists programme not sponsored by ministry: Tengku Adnan

KUALA LUMPUR: The fund for free petrol to motorcyclists in parliamentary constituencies in the Federal Territories is fully borne by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) and not from the government.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the programme was initiated by an NGO to help reduce the financial burden of the people.
"The programme is not funded by the ministry and has nothing to do with government funds," he told reporters after opening the 2017 Wilayah International Motofest here today.
Bernama yesterday reported that the Federal Territory Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth wing would be giving free petrol to motorcyclists in every parliamentary constituencies in Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya every month beginning April.
The programme received negative feedbacks and was said to be in conflict with Tengku Adnan's earlier proposal to ban low-powered or 'kapcai' motorcycles in the city centre.
Tengku Adnan said the ministry would however keep introducing new initiatives to reduce the people's burden and cost of living.
"For example, this year we launched the bus programme for children living at the People's Housing Projects (PPR) and we are also working on providing shuttle service from the PPR to LRT (Light Rail Transit) stations," he said. — Bernama
