Gurney Drive splashed with purple

GEORGE TOWN: More than a hundred volunteers spent some two hours today morning tying purple cloth around 500 trees in Pulau Tikus and Gurney Drive in a bid to raise awareness about cancer.
Penang Adventist Hospital CEO Dr Wesley Toh said the "Painting Penang Purple" campaign was to encourage and support those who were suffering from cancer.
He said the tagline of "You Won't Fight Alone" was to tell cancer patients and the community of the importance of coming together to fight cancer.
Toh also said he was frequently asked why the colour purple was chosen for the year-long campaign and not pink.
"Pink is for breast cancer, purple represents all cancers, we want to raise awareness for all cancers," he said in his speech during the launch with Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Lim in his speech meanwhile urged those battling cancer to carry a positive attitude and have a fighting spirit.
He said support from family and community members was important in trying to beat cancer.
"The idea of using purple cloth on tree is a good awareness tool," he said at the launch in Gurney Paragon here.
