The businessman said the rain tree, which was planted in 1887 to commemorate the birthday of Queen Victoria, was symbolic but safety came first.

The rain tree is one of 20 trees planted by British colonials on June 20, 1887, and is the only one left within the Gardens and is locally known as "Pokok Pukul Lima" (Five o' clock tree) as the leaves close before sunset and open just after sunrise.
