KUALA LUMPUR: A high-level delegation from North Korea, led by its former deputy permanent representative to the United Nations Ri Tong-Il, arrived here today to address issues pertaining to both countries.
Upon arrival, Ri promptly declared: "From today, I will be the official spokesperson."
The diplomat said he will be staying in the city in order to discuss a few issues with the Malaysian government and other relevant agencies.
"I will be discussing mainly three issues with government officials.
"Among these are those related to the return of the North-Korean citizen's remains (Kim Jong-nam), the release of the North Korean citizen who was detained by police (chemist Ri Jong-Chol) and the diplomatic relations between the two countries," he told reporters outside the North Korean Embassy here.
Ri added the delegation also seeks the "development of friendly relationships" between North Korea and Malaysia.
However, when asked if North Korean embassy second secretary Hyon Kwang-song, who is sought in Jong-nam's murder, has been interviewed by police, Ri refused to respond and merely walked away.
Hyon's status as the second secretary of the North Korean Embassy in Malaysia is also in question, according to a Diplomatic and Consular Mission Malaysia list posted online.
A check by Bernama showed that the Second Secretary at the embassy is named Yu Yong Nam.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had said last Wednesday that Hyon was identified as the Second Secretary at the North Korean Embassy in Malaysia.
