PETALING JAYA: An unwed mother's ruse of having her secret baby hopefully taken in by her own family failed when she was arrested after dumping the newborn at her backyard in Batang Kali, Hulu Selangor.
Hulu Selangor police chief Supt R. Supramaniam said the suspect alerted her family that she had found a baby wrapped in cloth at the back of her house at 7.30am yesterday.
Police who went to the scene on receiving a report became suspicious on finding that there was no way for any outsider to trespass into the premises.
Their suspicion grew on meeting the 19-year-old mother as she appeared unusually weak, Supramaniam said in a statement yesterday.
He said upon questioning, the girl admitted she gave birth to the baby 6.45am.
He said the girl's mother was not aware that her daughter had been pregnant.
Police nabbed the girl and a 17-year-old boy to facilitate investigation.
Supramaniam said the baby is safe and the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years old by the parents or person having care of the child.
