LANGKAWI: Measures are being taken to ensure that the upgrading of Jalan Pantai Cenang is completed before Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima'17) starts on March 21.
Langkawi district officer Isahak Murat said the Lima '17 ministerial coordination meeting had emphasised that the issue be resolved immediately.
"The Defence Minister (Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein) who chaired meeting had asked me to solve the issue (Jalan Pantai Cenang). I accept the responsibility and will ensure that it is done," he told Bernama.
Isahak said the contractor for the road upgrading project have shown their commitment to clean-up the area before the international event starts.
"Following the many complaints received, we have given them until Friday to improve the road condition (Jalan Pantai Cenang)."
Work on one lane of the road which serves as an alternative route to Jalan Pantai Cenang would be completed before Lima '17 starts and thus reduce traffic congestion in the area.
Isahak said a 'park and ride' area will also be opened to allow the visitors to park their cars and thus avoid parking on the road shoulder.
The Langkawi Municipal Council will also install 10 road signs prohibiting motorists from parking vehicles on the left shoulder of Jalan Pantai Cenang.
Errants motorists who violate the rule would be summoned.
Jalan Pantai Cenang is the shortest route linking the two Lima '17 locations, Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) at Jalan Lapangan Terbang and Resorts World at Tanjung Malai. — Bernama
