MBPP warns businesses against unpermitted banners

GEORGE TOWN: Businesses which advertise via banners without permits from the local authorities will have their office phone numbers terminated, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has warned.
Public Health and Licensing alternate chairman Ong Ah Teong said MBPP and the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will be working together to do so.
He said the council will forward to the MCMC the phone numbers found on banners hung without the proper permits for action.
He said the business in question needs to clear the matter with the council in three days or action will be taken.
"Disconnecting the phone line will take about a month," he added in a press conference today.
Most of the illegal banners found were advertising money-lending services, tuition, housing agents and pre-school services.
Ong said the council will continue to take action against illegal banners and has issued 908 compounds at RM250 each last year.
"A total of 18,415 banners were taken down too in 2016," he added.
