Supervisor jailed, fined RM40,000 for corruption

SEREMBAN: A workshop supervisor was sentenced to a total of 14 days' jail and fined RM40,000 by the Sessions Court here today on two counts of corruption.
Judge Fathiyah Idris handed down the sentence on Lim Hong Piew, 51, who pleaded guilty to both the charges.
Lim was sentenced to seven days' jail and fined RM20,000, in default three months' jail, on the first count for offering RM500 to an Immigration officer, Zambri@Johari Jaafar Sidek, as an inducement to not take action against his two foreign workers for allegedly violating their permit.
He was also sentenced to seven days' jail and fined RM20,000, in default three months' jail, on another charge with giving the same amount of money to the same person for the same purpose.
Both the offences were committed at 2.25pm and 3pm, respectively, on May 30 last year at 210 Monkey Board Parking Lori Kg Kebun Bukit Pelandok in Port Dickson.
However, Lim was ordered to serve the jail sentences concurrently from today.
The charges against Lim were made under Section 24 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act, which provides an imprisonment for up to 20 years and fine of up to five times the amount of bribe involved, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
In mitigation, Lim, who was unrepresented, said he has an elderly mother, a wife and two school-going children to support.
