TO study in Edinburgh is to experience a city that’s both exciting and beautiful. The capital of Scotland has been a hub of culture, education, history and innovation for centuries. It is these qualities that make Edinburgh a special place for millions of people. For students, the city creates an unforgettable experience and provides opportunities to make the most of their education.
An international city
Edinburgh is a truly international city. With over 80,000 students from more than 100 countries, it boasts a community that is diverse, vibrant and open to everyone. Edinburgh breathes with a youthful, exciting energy surrounded by its beautiful historical heritage. The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh are a Unesco World Heritage Site, making every walk around the city an exciting trip into its history.
The festival city
Every student’s experience is surrounded by Edinburgh’s famous arts and cultural scene. The city hosts more than 12 incredible festivals every year, including a science festival, an international film festival and the world’s largest arts festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which attracts millions of visitors and performers from all over the world every summer to showcase the best of theatre, comedy, music and dancing.
Literary traditions
As well as the festivals, Edinburgh prides itself on its centuries of literary tradition. World-renowned authors have created some of the most celebrated and successful works of literature of all time. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – creator of Sherlock Holmes – was born in Edinburgh and spent a large part of his life studying and working in the city. In addition, the world’s favourite wizard, Harry Potter, was born here.
Something for everyone
Plenty of cafés and pubs contribute to the lively and friendly atmosphere of the city.
This feeling of a close community is best experienced during days out in parks and green areas, of which there are plenty – inside the city there are over 100 parks!
For students who like to take their mind off studying by venturing into the outdoors, there are amazing spots to visit all around the city. At the edge of the Old Town and right next to Queen Elizabeth’s summer residence, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, stands tall Arthur’s Seat – an ancient extinct volcano that adds another layer to Edinburgh’s long, rich history. For fans of hiking or cycling, a trip to the nearby Pentland Hills makes for an escape from city life.
Explore Scotland
Living in Edinburgh also hands students the opportunity to explore the rest of Scotland – a country of beautiful nature and incredible cities. Only a bus or train journey away are the famous Scottish Highlands with hundreds of lochs, including the famous Loch Ness, the Isle of Skye, the historical city of St Andrews and dolphin watching spots at the very north of the country.
Edinburgh Napier University
In this extraordinary city lies Edinburgh Napier University.
