KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Annuar Musa said he backs the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) move to request for the Asian Cup match in Pyongyang to be moved to neutral ground.
Annuar who is a candidate for the FAM president's post, said the safety of the players is of utmost priority.
"Sports should be above politics, what is happening between North Korea and Malaysia right now can be considered as politics and supposedly this should not involve sports.
"But because the venue is at a place that might create tension, thus, safety should be a top priority, and if you ask me, the match should be played on neutral ground," Annuar Musa told reporters when met at Parliament lobby here.
On Sunday, FAM secretary-general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin had discussed with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) secretary-general Datuk Windsor Paul about the possibility of playing on neutral ground if there was a security threat to the Malaysian squad.
The Asian qualifiers match is scheduled to be held in Pyongyang on March 28.
Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and North Korea became strained after the murder of Kim Jong-Nam, the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) on Feb 13.
