KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat observed a minute of silence yesterday to commemorate the third anniversary of the disappearance of flight MH370.
A special session was held in the Lower House for 10 minutes in remembrance of the ill-fated flight and all those onboard.
Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Ismail Mohamed Said called for MPs from both sides of the political divide to rise and observe a minute of silence at the end of the session.
"To commemorate the third anniversary of the MH370 incident and to pay respects to the passengers and crew members, I would like to invite members of the Parliament to rise," he said.
Earlier during the session, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai gave a special address in the Dewan Rakyat on the tragedy.
Liow assured the nation that the decision to suspend the underwater search in the southern Indian Ocean on Jan 17 did not mark the end of the government's efforts to find answers on the mysterious disappearance of the plane.
"The search was suspended while we wait for more evidence based on analysis of the data and comprehensive information that was obtained by the expert team in Australia.
"The aspiration to find flight MH370 was never abandoned," he stressed.
He said the decision to suspend the two and a half-year search mission was a tough decision to make.
"The decision that was reached together with the governments of Australia and China was not taken lightly.
"However, believe that all of us want to know the answer, whether it is the family members, the government, the people of Malaysia and the world community," he added.
Liow also thanked both the Australian and China governments and other nations and organisations that had come forward to provide assistance in the search efforts.
Flight MH370 went off radar on March 8, 2014, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
