More than 80,000 Malaysians declared bankrupt between 2013 - 2016

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 82,383 people were declared bankrupt by the court between 2013 and 2016, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
She said Selangor topped the chart as the state with the most number of people declared bankrupt, with 22,593 cases, followed by Johor (12,028 cases) and the Federal Territories (11,687 cases).
Perlis on the other hand was the state with the least number of bankruptcies within the period, with only 354 cases recorded.
Azalina said this in the Dewan Rakyat in response to a parliamentary question posed by Lim Lip Eng (DAP - Segambut), who had asked for the statistics of bankruptcy by state, gender and among civil servants.
She said there was a rise in bankruptcy cases among civil servants by 13.9% in 2016 as compared to 2015.
Azalina said the total number of bankruptcy cases among civil servants between 2013 to 2016 was 3,276 cases.
She said the government has undertaken several measures to reduce bankruptcy cases through the Malaysian Insolvency Department.
